We enjoyed a nice overcast coolish day for August as we explored a restored bog in North Georgia.
These mountain bogs are very rare habitats and are also very threatened. One very dedicated group, the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance, has become the bog protectors and has worked endlessly to conserve these precious habitats. Carrie is a major force in this organization.
We were fortunate to be able to witness how this bog has recovered from extensive damage this year from feral hogs. Much has been done to bring back this rare habitat. Carrie spent hours replanting the disturbed sphagnum and pitcher plants within. Now exclosures have been built over the Pitcher Plants to keep them from being disturbed again. We found a couple of blooms still on the pitcher plants and Cuthbert's Turtlehead, Smooth Lobelia, along with lots of Boneset and Cowbane in bloom. Thanks to Carrie for sharing this special place and for the incredible amount of knowledge she presented.
